India’s five largest small finance banks use AI inside the bank, mostly for credit, fraud and automation. AU and Utkarsh have the clearest AI plans. None of the five publishes proof of AI at scale. Their websites are only partly set up to be found and quoted by AI search tools.

Disclosure: Your next FD customer may never open your website.

They’ll ask ChatGPT or Gemini which bank pays the best rate. The AI will answer in four lines. If your bank isn’t in those lines, you don’t exist for that customer.

This isn’t a future problem. TD Bank’s 2026 consumer survey found that 55% of Americans had asked AI tools for financial advice. A year earlier, only 10% had. (American Banker)

ChatGPT had 180 million monthly users in India in January 2026. That’s Sensor Tower data, reported by TechCrunch. Gemini had 118 million.

So I studied India’s five largest small finance banks: AU, Equitas, Ujjivan, Jana and Utkarsh. I asked two simple questions. Are they using AI inside the bank? And are their websites ready for AI search?

The Numbers Behind the Shift

Before looking at the banks, look at the customers. The move to AI for money questions is already measurable.

Data point

Source

India has 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, OpenAI’s second-largest market. The base grew four times in a year.

Unite.AI, quoting Sam Altman (Feb 2026)

49% of consumers used AI for financial decisions in the past six months.

EY survey of 18,000 people in 23 countries

40% of Americans used AI to help manage their money in the past three months.

J.D. TD found 62% of Americans trust AI for honest information. Only 18% would let AI make financial recommendations on its own.

That gap is good news for banks. People still want a trusted institution in the answer. The question is whose name the AI puts there.

Let’s keep this in proportion too. Google still sent 87.6% of search referrals in May 2026. All AI chatbots combined sent 0.29%, according to Cloudflare Radar data.

So AI won’t replace Google by Diwali. But the answer is moving above the click, and that’s where trust gets decided.

How I Checked the Five Banks

I read each bank’s latest investor presentation, results release and annual report. Most figures cover Q1 FY2026-27, the quarter that ended on 30 June 2026.

On 4 October 2026, I also checked public website signals. These included robots.txt rules for AI crawlers, sitemaps, schema markup and FAQ content.

One rule kept me honest. A mobile app or digital account opening doesn’t count as AI.

Digital isn’t the same as intelligent.

This article doesn’t measure how often ChatGPT or Gemini actually cite these banks. That’s Part 2. I’m running a 32-prompt test across four AI engines right now.

What Global Data Says About Banks in AI Answers

The best data so far comes from the US. The 5W Banking AI Visibility Index 2026 tested 31,500 prompts across five AI engines over five months.

The result should worry every bank marketer. Wikipedia, Bankrate and Investopedia supplied 68% of banking citations in AI answers. Bank-owned websites got just 6.8%. (The Financial Brand)

Banks build the products. Publishers write the answers.

Size helps, but not evenly. Chase took 28.4% of consumer banking citations, more than Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi and Capital One combined. Chase holds only 12% to 13% of US deposits.

The other end is harsh. The same index found 22 large US banks with almost no AI presence at all.

Money doesn’t buy your way in either. Card issuers spend about $20 billion a year on marketing. Their own pages still earn under 6% of AI citations for credit cards. (The Financial Brand)

Conductor’s 2026 benchmark tells a similar story. Banks got the lowest share of AI referral traffic in finance, at 0.16%. NerdWallet and Bankrate were the most-cited domains. (Conductor)

Fintel Connect found the same pattern in its own tests. Affiliate and publisher content made up 60% of sources cited for financial prompts. (Fintel Connect)

One finding should make every SFB marketer sit up. On safety questions like deposit insurance, three of five AI engines called Chime and Varo “fintech” rather than “bank”. They sent those answers to big chartered banks instead.

Reddit also supplied about 15% of US neobank citations, and around 25% inside Perplexity. (5W neobank study)

Why does this matter in India? SFBs face the same doubt. “Are small finance banks safe?” is a common customer question. If AI answers it vaguely, the customer may simply pick SBI or HDFC.

Old information also sticks like glue. In a separate 5W study, AI tools still described N26 as “available in Europe” in 41% of US answers. N26 had left the US two years earlier. (PR Newswire)

Will India look the same? My guess is yes, with comparison sites playing the role of Bankrate. Part 2 will test that guess.

Is GEO Getting Real Budgets Yet?

The tool market thinks so. G2’s answer engine optimization category grew from 7 products in March 2025 to 248 listings by April 2026.

Marketers are slower. In the same roundup, 63% of marketers said GEO gets no investment at all. (Elite Content Marketer)

Banks sit on the cautious side of that split. Compliance reviews make every new page slow. That’s exactly why the early movers will gain ground.

The Five Banks at a Glance

Bank

Clearest AI evidence

AI results published?

AI search signals on website

Ujjivan SFB

Near real-time data, analytics, 77 RPA processes

Yes: about ₹429 crore extra business linked to analytics (management-reported)

AI crawlers allowed; old archives kept out

AU SFB

AI Centre of Excellence, 50+ use cases, agentic AI gold loan pilot

Partly: about 70% of AML alerts resolved through AI models

All major AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt

Equitas SFB

AI analytics engine for customer feedback, Aidy chatbot

No bank-reported AI numbers

Deep FAQs; technical checks blocked

Jana SFB

AI and RPA automation, AI scorecards for used car loans

No: “early signs” only

No schema found; sitemap dates from 2018

Utkarsh SFB

Responsible AI programme, agentic AI and GenAI on the roadmap

Partly: credit turnaround linked to automation

Organization, WebSite and FAQPage schema on homepage

Top 5 Small Finance Banks: What the Filings Show

1. Ujjivan Small Finance Bank: Strong Numbers, Quiet AI Talk

Ujjivan rarely shouts “AI”. Its Q1 FY27 investor presentation talks about data and analytics instead.

Yet its numbers are among the most concrete in the group. More than 1,200 key data elements refresh in near real time. The bank runs 77 RPA processes, saving the work of 101 full-time staff.

Ujjivan links about ₹429 crore of additional Q1 business to analytics. It also recovered around ₹20 crore from written-off loans. Both are management-reported figures, not audited AI results.

Its robots.txt allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. It also blocks old PDF archives and selected sections.

I like that approach. Keeping stale pages away from AI matters as much as opening the door to fresh ones.

Ujjivan also marks itself up clearly for machines. Its pages carry BankOrCreditUnion, Organization and FAQPage schema. The sitemap was updated on 3 October 2026.

2. AU Small Finance Bank: Explicit AI Plan

AU’s FY2025-26 annual report has a section called “Building an AI-Native Bank”. That’s a bold label for a bank holding ₹1,57,727 crore in deposits.

The Q1 FY27 numbers back part of the claim. AU is setting up an AI Centre of Excellence with more than 50 use cases. About 70% of its AML alerts are reviewed and resolved through AI models. (AU Q1 FY27 press release)

The base behind it is large. AU’s FY2024-25 annual report lists an in-house tech team of over 1,000 people. Technology spend runs at about 8% to 10% of operating expenses.

Its AI-led lead platform has over 25,000 users. Of those, 92% use it every day. Those are adoption numbers, not slideware.

The headline project is an agentic AI journey for gold loans. AU calls it a limited, controlled rollout. Similar journeys for car loans, mortgages and credit cards are still being built. (AU Q1 FY27 investor presentation)

AU’s robots.txt openly welcomes GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. The bank clearly wants AI tools to read its pages.

The basics are in place too. AU’s pages carry Organization, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema. Its sitemap lists 1,318 URLs, and the homepage was updated on 3 October 2026.

3. Equitas Small Finance Bank: Practical Tools, Few Public AI Numbers

Equitas uses an AI-enabled analytics engine to read customer feedback. It groups keywords, reads sentiment and spots service gaps early. The annual report gives no outcome numbers, though.

Its chatbot, Aidy, works on the website, mobile banking and WhatsApp. Customers can check balances, download statements and request cheque books.

Its most measurable AI result comes from a vendor. Netcore says its AI engine timed Equitas email campaigns better. Open rates rose 32% and click rates rose 130%. The case study is undated and not audited by the bank. (Netcore)

Equitas has strong content too. Its product pages are clear, and its internet banking FAQ is long and detailed.

One page caught my eye. The investor FAQ still quotes operating figures from the quarter ended 30 September 2024. An AI tool could repeat those two-year-old numbers as current fact.

4. Jana Small Finance Bank: Digital at Scale, AI Still Early

Jana runs one of the most digital operations in the group. In Q1 FY27, 98% of its banking transactions were digital. So were 99% of its loans. (Jana Q1 FY27 investor presentation)

The AI story is thinner. Jana says it’s focusing on AI and RPA-led automation. It reports “early signs” of productivity gains but shares no numbers.

Its clearest named AI use case dates to September 2025. Jana partnered with Scienaptic to use AI scorecards for used car loans.

The website tells a weaker story. Jana’s robots.txt returns a 404 error. I found no schema on its homepage or FAQ page.

Its XML sitemap is the bigger worry. The listed pages show a last update of 20 July 2018. AI crawlers use those dates to judge freshness.

5. Utkarsh Small Finance Bank: Ambitious AI Plans, Recovery Underway

Utkarsh’s FY2025-26 annual report says the bank began structured “Responsible AI” adoption. Its Q1 FY27 presentation mentions agentic AI, generative AI for internal work and multilingual voice workflows.

The deck also claims 100% automation for its liability and micro-banking systems. Much of the wider roadmap carries an “in progress” tag. The data lake and the new core banking system are still being built.

The financial turnaround is real. Utkarsh cut its Q1 net loss to ₹34 crore, from ₹239 crore a year earlier. Gross NPA fell to 5.9% from 11.4%. (Utkarsh Q1 FY27 press release)

Management links that recovery to automation and digital underwriting. The filings don’t show how much of that came from AI.

On the technical side, Utkarsh is in good shape. Its homepage carries Organization, WebSite and FAQPage schema, plus canonical tags. Its XML sitemap showed updates on 19 August 2026.

Four Patterns Across All Five Banks

1. AI Works in the Back Office First

Almost every disclosed use case sits in credit, fraud, collections or automation. Customer-facing generative AI is rare. Aidy at Equitas is the only clearly named chatbot in the group.

In my view, that’s the right order. A bank that can’t trust its own data shouldn’t let a chatbot talk to customers.

2. Plans Are Public, Proof Isn’t

None of the five publishes a model inventory, an AI risk framework or an AI results dashboard. The RBI’s FREE-AI committee report found a clear divide in AI adoption between large and small financial institutions.

Global leaders are already past that stage. Look at the top three banks in Evident’s 2026 AI Index. At each one, over 80% of engineers use AI tools regularly.

Bank of America became the 13th bank in that index to report AI returns. A year earlier, only 8 did. Lloyds expects about $133 million in GenAI value in 2026. (Evident)

Among India’s top five SFBs, none reports an audited AI return. Ujjivan’s ₹429 crore analytics figure is the closest, and it’s management-reported.

Nubank ranked first in Evident’s 2026 AI Index for Latin American banks. Its CTO explains what makes AI work at scale:

“The best AI organizations build the engineering systems, platforms, and culture that allow AI to improve every product and every customer interaction.”
Eric Young, Chief Technology Officer, Nubank (source)

Systems and culture are hard to show in an investor deck. Still, Indian SFBs could publish far more than they do today.

3. Digital Doesn’t Equal AI-Ready

Jana processes 99% of loans digitally. Ujjivan opens 96.6% of savings accounts digitally. Both numbers are impressive. Neither proves that a model is making decisions.

4. Three of Five Bank Websites Are Ready for AI Crawlers

I confirmed these data from individual websites on 4 October 2026.

Bank

AI crawlers allowed

Schema confirmed

XML sitemap

FAQ content

Freshness risk

Ujjivan SFB

Yes. All three allow AI crawlers, carry FAQ schema and keep their sitemaps fresh.

Equitas couldn’t be assessed. Its firewall blocked every technical check, so I can’t say either way.

Jana’s site needs the most attention. Its sitemap shows July 2018 dates, and I found no schema. Old dates can make fresh pages look stale to AI crawlers.

Allowing GPTBot won’t put you in ChatGPT’s answer. It only stops you from being locked out. You’ve opened the front door, but someone still has to walk in.

My Verdict: Ready in Pockets, Not Yet as Banks

If I had to bet on one bank to lead, I’d pick AU. It has the plan, the people, and early numbers. Utkarsh has an ambitious roadmap, and much of it is still being built. Ujjivan has hard data and could say much more about it.

Here’s my stand. These banks talk a lot about AI inside the bank. They say almost nothing about being quoted by AI outside it.

That’s a missed opportunity. SFB customers are often first-time savers and small borrowers. They’re exactly the people asking ChatGPT for money advice in plain language.

So here’s a question for any bank marketer reading this. When did you last ask ChatGPT about your own FD rates?

What SFB Marketing Teams Can Do This Quarter

Ask the AI tools yourself. Run your top 20 customer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Note which sites get cited.

Put dated facts on HTML pages. Rates and key numbers should sit on crawlable pages with a visible “last updated” date, not just inside PDFs.

Clean up stale pages. Update or block old FAQs and PDFs, the way Ujjivan keeps old archives out.

Fix your Wikipedia entry. In the 5W US study, Wikipedia alone supplied 19.3% of banking citations.

Earn mentions on sites AI trusts. In India, that likely means comparison sites and business news. Part 2 will confirm which ones.

Write answers, not brochures. Put one clear question and one direct answer near the top of each product page.

New to this topic? Start with my guide to generative engine optimization.

Key Takeaways

All five top SFBs use AI or automation, mostly in credit, fraud and operations.

AU has the most explicit AI plan, including an AI Centre of Excellence and 50+ use cases.

Ujjivan and Utkarsh report the clearest business results linked to analytics and automation.

No bank publishes an AI model inventory, risk framework or results dashboard.

In the US, bank websites earned only 6.8% of AI banking citations. Publishers took most of the rest.

India accounts for 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. Separately, a global consumer survey found that 49% of respondents use AI to help with financial decisions.

AU, Ujjivan and Utkarsh allow AI crawlers, use FAQ schema and keep their sitemaps fresh.

Jana’s sitemap shows 2018 dates. Equitas’s site couldn’t be checked because its firewall blocked the requests.

Some global banks have reported financial benefits from AI. This review found no publicly disclosed, audited figure for AI returns among the five Indian SFBs studied.

Giving AI crawlers access opens the door. It does not guarantee that a bank will appear in an AI answer or receive a citation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GEO for banks?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It helps AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini find and cite a bank’s content. It relies on clear facts, dated pages, structured data and mentions on trusted third-party sites.

Which small finance bank is most ready for AI?

Based on public disclosures, AU Small Finance Bank. It has an AI Centre of Excellence and more than 50 use cases. AI models handle about 70% of its AML alerts. Its main lending use case is still in a controlled rollout.

Does allowing GPTBot mean my bank will appear in ChatGPT?

No. Allowing GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot only lets OpenAI’s crawlers read your pages. Whether ChatGPT cites you depends on content quality, freshness and how often trusted sites mention you.

Why do AI tools cite comparison sites more than bank websites?

Comparison sites answer the exact questions people ask, like “best FD rate”. They compare many banks on one page and update often. Bank pages usually describe one product in marketing language.

Are AI answers about bank FD rates accurate?

Not always. AI tools can repeat old rates or outdated facts, as the N26 example shows. Always confirm rates on the bank’s official website before you invest.

Disclaimer: This is an independent analysis based on public information as of 4 October 2026.
